Challenge
Extracting Structured Data from Unstandardized Medical Reports
Even with robust internal workflows and automation already in place, JAG Source faced a persistent operational constraint common across healthcare billing: medical reports do not follow a single template.
Extracting consistent, structured data from highly variable documents proved difficult to standardize at scale. Reports arrived via multiple methods from hundreds of providers, each using different layouts, formats, and scanning quality. Prior OCR-based approaches and custom solutions were used, but were limited by rigid templates, pixel-level dependencies, and inconsistent document quality.
As report volumes increased, staff were still required to open documents, locate key fields, and normalize data manually to support downstream matching logic. The process worked, but it was tedious and could not scale at the same pace as JAG Source’s other automated systems.
